SMA II and the Muscular Dystrophy Association
Intermediate Spinal Muscular Atrophy (also known as SMA Type 2) is a genetic disease in which loss of nerve cells in the spinal cord affect voluntary muscle movement. The disease causes weakness in the arms, legs and upper and lower torso. Onset of symptoms usually begins at 6 to 18 months.

MDA is a voluntary health agency working to defeat SMA and more than 40 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services and far-reaching professional and public health education. MDA-funded researchers have isolated the gene that, when defective, leads to the disintegration of motor neurons (nerve cells that control the movement of voluntary muscles) and causes several types of SMA. MDA-funded scientists are testing potential SMA treatments, while MDA clinics provide medical management for children and adults affected by the disease.

To learn more about MDA and neuromuscular diseases, including muscular dystrophy and SMA, call 1-800-FIGHT-MD (1-800-344-4863) or visit our Web site at www.mda.org.
